This project is sited on a remote stretch of the North Shore of Prince Edward Island in Canada. The existing house is nestled in a small forest clearing and the property slopes gently to the Gulf of St. Lawrence beyond. Accommodations are cozy, and this project will allow the owners to more comfortably host family and friends throughout the year. The program calls for additional sleeping spaces for guests, a bathroom, and a shared workspace for the clients. It felt very important that the addition not overtake the scale of the existing house and also to not disrupt the many oak trees planted by the home’s original owners. By connecting to the house’s existing front entry, this new volume slides forward on the site to create a protected outdoor space for fires, stargazing, and watching the northern lights. The existing house (left) is re-clad to match the new addition (right). The cladding itself is allowed to weather to grey so that the entire house feels continuous with its surrounding site.
